Using the Public Telephone

As a traveller it is suggested that you consider acquiring a telephone calling card. It is a convenient way of keeping in touch. Our public phonecards are quick, convenient and cheap to use and save you the hassle of having to search for the right amount of change in your pockets, your purse, your wallet or your handbag.

Public phonecards are usually available from your hotel reception desk and our local shops and supermarkets. If you already have one, verify that you can use it from our public telephone sites.

When using a public telephone the actual process of making a call usually hinders your line of sight and your range of movements. It is thus sensible to remember the following tips:

1. Have another adult friend or fellow traveller who will serve as your lookout when you make your call.

2. Attempt to keep all calls as short as possible.

3. Avoid carrying large or cumbersome items that you may have to place on the floor while making your call.

4. Ensure that you have the exact and correct change or your valid phonecard ready at hand before you arrive at the public telephone unit.

5. If you are in the slightest bit uncomfortable with the "look" of the people present at the public telephone booth, walk back to your hotel and resolve to try again at a later stage when you feel safer. If you are still uneasy with the situation, check with your hotel or tour guide if there is another payphone located at a venue where you would feel much safer.

6. Do not conduct your conversation on the public telephone with your back facing the opening of the unit. Turn around and ensure that you are constantly aware of what is happening around you.
