KZN HEROES

The KZN SAPS Search and Rescue Unit:

The KZN SAPS Search and Rescue Unit was founded nine (9) years ago by Inspector Troy Allison who still serves as the Unit's Commander. The unit presently consists of eight(8) members and their primary function is the technical execution of all AIR , LAND and WATERBORNE SEARCH AND RESCUE missions within the area of KZN.

All members are highly trained according to stringent international standards and are highly experienced in all aspects of technical rescue. The unit has consistently received internal and public commendations, as well as being the focus of international television documentaries and various magazines dealing with the search and rescue domain. The KZN SAPS Search and Rescue Unit can well hold their own with the very best that the world has to offer.

At any given time, the unit has immediate access to the type of boats, aircraft and all terrain vehicles that any rescue mission demands. Being a 24 hour Emergency Service, the units initiation time to response is immediate, and the travel time to ground zero is only determined by the length of the distance.

A typical mission will consist of a primary response team and a secondary team. The task of the primary response team is arrive at ground zero as soon as is possible and asses and stabilise the situation by determining and executing the extent of action to be taken. During this time the secondary team will be preparing for additional response should it be required. More often, the primary response team will be more that adequately equipped and able to effectively deal with the situation.

The KZN SAPS Search and Rescue Unit is one of the busiest agencies in the country and is fervently championed and supported by the top management structure of the SAPS. In 2002 alone , the unit executed more than 400 search and rescue operations and has a highly successful record. So much so that to date the unit has never lost and single life during a rescue operation and has never lost a member.

Inspector Troy Allison emphasises that the Units sterling record positively demonstrates that the police do actually care!!
